The Memory Tree
THEME - GRIEF
We need to think about preparing our children for grief. This is a beautiful story with equally beautiful illustrations to help little ones think about death and dying. There are lots of books out there on this subject. I'm not a fan of most. Some are too confusing, overly religious, poorly illustrated or create extra worries if not used in the right context (i.e telling a story about grandad dying when it's their uncle that has died).
I like this one and have recommended to my family members. The story focuses on the love for the person who has died and how memories can keep you connected with the love for person who has gone. The pictures are stunning.
As with any story for children, you need to pre-read and make sure you have explanations for anything they may misunderstand. In this book, there is only one real issue in that they refer to the death originally as going to sleep. You will need to make sure you talk about that term to avoid any panic about actual sleeping. Other than that, I really like how it is written.
