THEME - EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
When children struggle to understand their feelings, this is when you can start see some worrying behaviours such as becoming more withdrawn, sleep disturbances and angry outbursts. One thing you can do to support your children is help them to increase their emotional literacy - that is to help them to develop their vocabulary for their feelings and link these words to their physical and emotional states in the moment, as you see them happening.
This is a gentle and fun, beautifully phrased and illustrated book that explores some of the most common emotions. Through this book, you can develop a shared language and understanding between you and your children about their feelings. You may well use the words, I.e “I can see you’re feeling sad.” However, some children can feel intimidated by naming their big feelings but might be comfortable starting off by talking about having a ‘red’ head or a ‘blue’ day. This book gives so much opportunity for ongoing development of feelings discussion between parent/children/families, scope for creative activities for further growth and also for using all of those things to develop joint coping strategies. Take a look and have fun!
