The children of this country have seen adults glorify a team of footballers for weeks. Rightly so, the England Team have been doing well on the pitch and some have been doing some amazing community work off the pitch.

Like Gareth said, it’s been a time of togetherness.

Now children are seeing some of these same adults behave appallingly to these same individuals. Blaming and shaming them for not making incredibly difficult penalties, against a notorious penalty saver in the most pressurised atmosphere ever. The message for children is really quite obvious:

👎🏻 Your best is never going to be good enough unless you are the absolute best.

👎🏽 It is completely okay to ridicule people who fail, no matter the reason.

= there is no unconditional love or acceptance around. Just conditional on your performance.

If that wasn’t damaging enough, individuals are being targeted with racial abuse. Those people who have been demi-gods for weeks are now being spoken about with some absolutely hideous language.

We don’t deserve football coming home if we allow this. I know our country and our team are not the only ones who need to address this issue. Let’s get our own house in order rather than deflecting attention to everyone else.

Our children are watching us. They deserve the best of us. Racism isn’t the best of us. Ignoring racism isn’t the best of us either.
